The River Rouge School District, an economically depressed area in the shadow of Detroit, has long struggled with segregation and persistent low achievement. Many districts in this situation might have taken the “easy” route — narrow the curriculum in preparation for tests. After all, would it make any difference if they tried a different way to help the kids in their district learn?

The River Rouge administration decided to take a dramatically different approach: project-based learning focused on nutrition and health — a key community need.

The district turned to Creative Change for guidance. This case study explores what happened next, including how we tackled the issues from the start of the project to what impact our collaborative work had on the district.
