Many institutions of higher education have seen the need to integrate more principles of sustainability. These educational leaders understand that integrating sustainability is about more than environmental science classes. True sustainability education requires interdisciplinary connections, critical thinking, exploration of ethics, and experiential learning.
CCES has been hard at work helping universities across the country with curriculum redesign. Our professional development model helps educators reframe curriculum content and pedagogy. Our most recent partnerships have included universities in Texas and Utah.
University of Texas Rio Grande Valley
We have a long-term partnership with The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. We helped them develop Project Sin Fronteras, a “project without borders” that provides a two-day workshop for faculty in all disciplines to learn how to integrate a multifaceted approach to sustainability.
The support CCES provided for the development of Project Sin Fronteras has helped earn the university a prestigious award. UTRGV has been designated as one of AASHE’s thirteen Centers for Sustainability Across the Curriculum.
Weber State University
Our next stop is even further west, at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. This May, we’ll be providing an intensive faculty development workshop on integrating sustainability across the curriculum. Faculty from departments spanning from anthropology to engineering, to chemistry to art will learn how sustainability education can expand the potential of their classrooms and students. We’ll work with faculty on ways to reframe sustainability to engage with equity and local community involvement.
